  • Collecting non-pro photos

EDIT:  If you have a AT&T/SBC Internet account, then a flickr.com account is FREE for you!!!  Just sign up for Flickr using your account’s email address and password (ie. @sbcglobal.com, etc.) and your pro access will be free as long as you have an account with them! If you already have a flickr account, simply change the email on the account to your AT&T/SBC account email, and your pro account will be upgraded to pro for free!

So many digital cameras… so many ways to get them from your friends and family! There is an abundance of websites that make collecting photos from others online quite simple, and it can often be difficult to choose how you’re going to do it. Some people opt to hand out CD-mailers to their guests, while others send email links to picture-purchase sites like Shutterfly or Photostation. After weighing the alternatives, I opted to ask my guests to submit their photos to Flickr for quite a few reasons:
    • I wanted anyone (including myself) to be able to download the photos in the full resolution
    • Personalized web address for easy viewing
    • Organization tools that let me rearrange the photos into sets and groups as I’d like
    • “Privacy” function for photos — they’d still be uploaded and available to me, but not to everyone
    • Super easy and reliable uploading tools
    • Easy way to upload all of the professional photos for viewing

So, I created an account with an easy login and password for our guests, and quickly paid the $25 upgrade fee to make it a “pro” account to allow unlimited uploads. At the wedding reception, I included the following small business card in everyone’s menu/evening program:

While it took people about a week to start putting their photos online, slowly but surely we started collecting hundreds of pictures. Each person uploaded their photos into little sets online with their name, which made things really easy to organize. I created photo sets like “Rehearsal Dinner” and “Reception (non-pro)” within the Flickr group, and easily extracted the photos from each person’s set that matched the themes. Then… I made all of their uploads private, and all you can see as a guest are the organized little groups.

Now some friends chose to publish their photos online with Picasa (aka. Google) Photo Albums, which was just as handy for me, since you can download the entire albums with a simple click. All I had to do to add them to Flickr was simply upload them from my computer… and I saved them the added task of doing it themselves.

In the end, I’m really happy I went with flickr and I’m sure I’ll be continuing to use their pro membership for years to come… mainly due to the unlimited storage and upload space!

If you’d like to see how well the album organization turned out, feel free to view our Flickr page.

  • Bridezilla Attacks!!!

Wow… good thing I didn’t show this side of me before/during the wedding!

Man do those photographers seem to capture the strangest moments on film!
(from my TTD session…. by Greg Bumatay)

  • Long after the shutter snaps

There is absolutely no subsitute for capturing the perfect moments on film with the correct lighting and at the perfect angle, but there’s no shame in saying that the post-production work on a photo can make something normal become absolutely amazing. Instead of laboring in the darkroom over noxious chemicals (although, who’s with me in adoring the peace and strange smells of the dark room for hours on end?), photographers today can simply click an action pack in Photoshop and transform images instantly. In fact, some photog’s are selling their action packs to help ease the process for others.

So what does it mean if your photographer is gifted in post-production? Well… take these “before and after” examples from Southern California photographer Becker to see what photoshop art can do:

There’s a fine balance between good/bad Photoshop, but it definitely can add a distinctive touch to your wedding photos. Luckily there are a lot of photographers who are using it to their advantage and producing amazing images.

Did you see a huge difference in your photos between the proofs and the end products?

  • Splashin’ the dress!

After all of the stir about the “Trash the Dress” phenomenon here on WeddingBee, I was a bit scared to post the outcome of the OC Trash Bash that I attended a few weeks back. But then again, the results were so awesome that I had to share with WeddingBee if just for the sake of enjoying a photographic experiment. You see, getting pictures back from multiple photographers from the same day has to be one of the neatest things ever… even before you throw in the perfect Laguna Beach day, surf and wedding dresses!

Now, these are just the teasers from the photographer’s respective blogs, so who knows what the full CD holds in store! I’m just still grateful to have had such a fun day with other brides and wonderful pictures to share from the experience. It’s fun being a test subject sometimes!

  • ‘Mooning on St. Kitts: Part II

‘Mooning on St. Kitts: Part I

For the most part, our honeymoon was a very lazy one… We didn’t have any sort of master schedule nor any huge plans for our time away, saving activities and touring for a normal vacation and making this one all about enjoying our new marriage. That said, we did make sure that we explored the island, and we ended up spending time each day on different beach and in the rainforest.

    Rainforest Hike

Our vacation stay included a hike into the rainforest, so one morning we were picked up from Ottley’s and taken up to the base of the volcano by a local tour guide named Earl.

The view up the road as we passed cows, goats and sheep

Mr. Lemon is all ready to go with his walking stick!

Bamboo from deep inside the rainforest

Some of the trail was blocked by nature

We got to sample lots of rainforest fruits along the way… and drink water straight from the mountain springs that was clearer and fresher than anything we have bottled here in the states.

I even got to swing on the jungle vines!

    The ocean
We went to the south side of the island almost everyday of our trip, which was a 15 minute drive down the coast. Now, for some this would be annoying, but for us it was our get-away adventure each day. We’d explore a new beach, do some snorkelling, and just rest and relax before grabbing a beer at the surfside bar and heading back to the resort for our afternoon nap. The best part about it though… we were alone at every beach. One day, there were 2 other people at the same stretch of beach, but they left about 30 minutes after we got there. Yup… sand, surf and water just for us… all over the island. Now I’m used to going to Maui and staying on semi-lonely beaches (10-30 people M-F), but this was just too amazing for words. Sadly, I don’t have too many photos since we kept the digital camera at home on beach days, but here are a few….

Getting our “beach towels” from Ottley’s everyday….

“White House” beach… it’s pretty rocky, but there are 2 sunken ships immediately in the cove… which made for AMAZING snorkeling.

The perfect bar… drinks only 10 ft. from the sand.

    Other highlights of the trip

The awesome lizards/geckos that came to visit everyday! Thanks to them, St. Kitts has a really low insect population… which means no bug bites in paradise!

Sunday Brunch…. I live for this meal… and I don’t think I’ll ever find a way to top this spread!

In all… St. Kitts was perfect and we will definitely be back in the future. I always imagined the Carribean as a bit too touristy for my tastes, but Kitts has changed my mind… and I think I could manage the long travel time getting there again.

  • Thank you Teasers

We asked our photographer, Fiona, to send us a few edited photos from the wedding so that we could use one of them for our “Thank You” notes. It didn’t take too long for us to pick our favorite from the bunch:

Who could resist the picking the mushy first dance picture… I mean really? :) With that decision made, I plopped the photo into my “Thank You” card template that I designed LONG ago… and fiddled with the photo to overlay a bit of a gold tone into the picture…. and got this:

I sent the PDF design off to CatPrint for the cards (I’ve had the site bookmarked since Mrs. Firefly mentioned it long ago) and I’ll let you know how the final print ends up!

  • ‘Mooning on St. Kitts: Part I

Mr. Lemon and I spent 8 crazy nights (and 9 wonderful days) on the beautiful island of St. Kitts for our honeymoon. A lot of people have visited the island as a stopover on an eastern Carribean cruise, but as we soon found out by the small number of tourists on the island, very few people stay for longer than that day. The island is relatively free of any major resorts (minus a new Marriott), so there really aren’t that many room to stay in to start with… which was perfectly fine with us! After all, my dream honeymoon consisted of empty beaches and tropical laziness… but I got so much more in Kitts!

    IMGP3445_1
Our adventure started out with a bit of a panic, however, thanks to some low lying clouds at LAX. We flew out of San Jose and due to the traffic delays in Los Angeles, our flight departed 2 hours late… giving us a window of ZERO minutes to make our connecting flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. This is where scheduling all of your flights on the same carrier helps tremendously, as American Airlines knew we were stuck in the air and that we’d be running onto the plane. When we finally got on, two people had taken our seats and grumbled as we laid on the honeymoon guilt trip. Seriously people… I’m not sitting next to a stranger on the plane as a 24-hour newlywed! Our flight to San Juan was long…. and difficult due to a “Class of ’87″ high school reunion group on the plane that liked to drink, snore and talk loudly at 3am, but we made it to Puerto Rico without Mr. Lemon or I slugging anyone. (I did, however, “SHHHHH!!!!” them quite a few times… sorry, it’s the middle school teacher instincts kicking in!)

    IMGP3457

We had a 4-hour layover at the airport, and we had been advised to head over to the “Casino/Hotel” that was attached to the terminal. That was pretty much a BAD idea, since the casino consisted of about 30 video slot machines in a stuffy little room, and nothing else was open. We did, however, find a ping pong table with a busted ping pong ball, and that entertained us for about 40 minutes. We walked back to the airport to peruse the Duty-Free shops and buy some reading material for the trip and logged online to send a brief blog update. Then we were off on our last of 3 flights!

    IMGP3463
Mr. Lemon’s super happy to get on the final plane…

    IMGP3465

    IMGP3467 IMGP3468
Here we are waiting on the tarmack to get off in Kitts. The planes have no A/C, so we were getting a little sweaty and impatient to get off…

    IMGP3470
    Hooray!!! We’re in Kitts!

    IMGP3471
Looking back at the plane and toward the volcanos.

When we hopped off the plane and through the passport check, we hopped in a cab and headed straight to our final destination… Ottley’s Plantation. Inn. The inn is an old sugar plantation that was converted into a resort, and is located about 15 minutes from the capital city of Basseterre on the Atlantic side of the island and nestled against the rainforest. We passed fields and fields of sugar cane, and before I could really get accustomed to the whole “left side of the road” driving, we were there!

The “great house” at Ottleys. Most of the rooms are guestrooms in the house, but it also has a large great room and gorgeous decks to lounge on..

    IMGP3482

Our room (#20) was located down the hill from the great house. It was a detached house just down from the restaurant, with a little trail leading onto the deck.

    IMGP3472
Our giant King bed inside the room! The plantation shutters let the breezes flow through, and there was A/C as well.

    IMGP3473 IMGP3477
Five minutes after arriving in our room, a bartender brought in 2 fresh rum punches (omg… their mixture was amazing!) and champagne for our honeymoon arrival!

    IMGP3479
Just outside the room was our lovely “plunge” pool!

    IMGP3480
We jumped in our plunge pool every chance we got, and just sat and read and relaxed on our private little deck.

    IMGP3481
The view from our patio and room.

    IMGP3483

    IMGP3484
One of the sparkling pools (fed with natural spring water from the mountains… no chemicals needed!) in front of the main restaurant bar.

    IMGP3485

It just happens that Ottley’s is home to one of, if not THE, best restaurant on the island. Dinner everynight was served starting from 6-8pm, and on the weekends the place was packed with tourists from the Marriott and other hotels/inns.  The prixe fixe menu was included in our package rates, so we never had to worry about what to eat or where… just what time we were going to wander up to our nightly feast.
Now when I say feast… I really really mean it. Each night there was a 4-course menu (plus a sampler course) of gourmet food that was to die for! The staff mocked me a bit the first night since I had severe difficulty finishing all of my courses… but I definetely got the hang of stuffing myself by the end of the trip!

    That first night we had:

    IMGP3488
    Ahi/Mango Ceviche

    IMGP3489
Roasted pork (It had a fancier name I’m sure…)

    IMGP3490
    Grilled Pompano w/Peppers

    IMGP3492
Mr. Lemon’s flourless chocolate cake…. with 4 dessert choices everynight it was so hard to choose…

    IMGP3537
(p.s. the food just kept getting better and better… here’s a sample of the menu the next night)

    IMGP3496
When we got back to our room, the nightly turndown maid had left us a message!

Let’s just say that I was completely in love with this place after rolling down the hill from dinner the night before, but when we really started relaxing the next day, I never wanted to leave!

Breakfast every morning (also included) was so filling that we never ate lunch while we were on the island!

    IMGP3499
    Banana pancakes

    IMGP3500
    Island scramble

So it plantation came with some added kicks as well….

    IMGP3502
Hammocks were strung in the trees and nustled near the rainforest.

    IMGP3505_1
Mr. Lemon was checking to find a ripe mango

Right behind the great house, there are two paths that lead into trails within the rainforest. They’re well marked paths that we walked each day in flip-flops, but only 20 feet from the start of the trail you could feel the difference in the humidity and notice the change in atmosphere.

At one end of the trail was the amazingly old tree whose roots went in every direction imaginable!IMGP3518

And guess what you could see all along the trail……  MONKEYS!!!! Yes, huge monkey families in fact with baby monkeys too!  Mr. Lemon and I would stand and watch them surround us for 40+ minutes as they just frolicked and played in the trees. A few got close to inspect us and make sure we weren’t going to harm them (the local farmers shoot the monkeys, since they’re huge pests on the island), and once we were ok they went on playing.

    IMGP3510
A video of the monkeys in action :)

Ottley’s was one nice spot for a honeymoon… and the staff made the experience top-notch. It didn’t hurt that there were, at most, 8 other people staying there (including the owners) at the same time as we were due to the off-season! Who wouldn’t want this place all to themselves!

Here’s a little video Mr. Lemon took leaving our room…

PART II with our rainforest and beach excursions coming up….

  • Same vs. Different

Mr. Lemon and I took different approaches to the bridal party gifts. I went and got all of my girls the exact same thing. He, on the other hand, went in search of something different for his guys.

    For the girls:

A gold Kate Spade clutch purse.

    A cardigan from Anthropologie

and their shirt for the next day!

    For the boys:

Mr. Lemon fell in love with these little bronze Frogman scuptures when we were shopping in Carmel one day, and wanted to get them for his guys. He kept Forest (the green frog) and gave the other four to his guys, so they’d all have a little piece of the set. So it’s not “that different” but enough to personalize the gifts.

So whose path will/did you follow? Did everyone get identical gifts, were they personalized, or did you get everyone something unique?

  • DIYdetails: Out of Town Bags

It was a hit with the guests long before we ever saw them: our OOT bags!

    CIMG0998

Most of our guests were travelling to reach our wedding… some from SoCal, others from the midwest and the east coast, and we wanted to make sure they made the most of their trip. For that exact reason, I made sure I bought reusable bags that people could keep… which was obviously a good idea since Mr. Lemon’s mom used hers throughout the entire trip!

Step 1: Find & buy the right bag!

I found my bags online at JiffyShirts.com for the amazing price of less than $2.61 each (I saved about $30 on the order from using some coupons)! I decided to order royal blue and navy blue, just to mix things up a little. The company is great and my order was delivered THE NEXT DAY. The bags are pseudo-canvas, but are definetely durable and perfect as a beach tote or extra shopping bag!

    Step 2: Motif it baby!

Oh yes… yet another gold rose! :) This time… I painted it onto the bag with gold silkscreen ink and made myself a useful template that made the job go by quite quickly!

    IMGP3294

Here’s the print-out from the computer. I made sure to include a box in my graphics program that was the same dimensions as the pocket on the bag, so that when I printed it out I knew exactly how to position it.

    IMGP3295

Time to cut out the stencil! I used my x-acto knife to cut out the rose, and traced the box with my sharpie for alignment purposes.

    IMGP3297-1

Inking up the stencil with my brayer and gold ink!

    Step 3: Fill ‘er up!

I had heard that this was the part of the project that got expensive quickly… so I spent some time at Costco picking out snacks that we could “repackage” in our little bags instead of spending extra money on individually packaged snacks.

    CIMG0945

2 Water bottles per bag ($10 total for the water). I attached a simple laser paper label that I had printed out to each bottle with a ZOT.

     CIMG0961

Animal crackers and gummi bears! ($8 total)

    CIMG0963

    Goldfish ($4) and prezels ($3)

    CIMG0957
    Salted Peanuts ($4)

    CIMG0954

Sugar cookies! ($4 for the mix)  I added the motif by cutting a very small stencil and applying blue food coloring to the royal icing top with a sponge.

For the bags, I used 6″x4″ plastic poly bags from PaperMart
($4.94 for 200) and Avery 1″ round white labels ($3.99 at OfficeMax). I
created the graphic in Illustrator and then made a template to print
them onto the labels, since the Microsoft Word templates from Avery.com
    didn’t work out too well.

      CIMG1001

BUNCHES of tourist brocheres, magazines and coupons = FREE!!!

Step 4: Take them to the people!!!

    CIMG0995

(The trunk and the whole backseat were full of bags!)

Mr. Lemon delivered all of the bags to the hotels (thank you Mr. GPS for making that easy for him) in one big trip (9 hotels and 4 different rented houses!). Two of the hotels (the Marriott and Portola Plaza) tried to make him pay $4 to hand out each bag until he pointed out that we had deliveries of over 10 bags to each hotel and that our wedding provided them quite a bit of business, and they quickly changed their mind. In the end, all the bags were either in the guest’s rooms upon arrival or waiting at the front desk when they checked in. Way to go Mr. Lemon!

    Would I do it again?

After hearing all of the guests thank us for them… in a heartbeat! Everyone loved getting the treats after a long day of travel (driving or flying or both), and I’ve had friends ask for another bag (minus the treats)… since some split rooms and only got one bag for two people.

In the end, the cost for the goodies was about $1/bag (inclusive of the packaging), so for a little over $3/bag it was well worth it! :)

  • Trash Bash in the OC

Trashthedress.com held an insanely fun “OC Trash Bash” yesterday (which many girls knew about from my WB posting…hooray!) in Laguna Beach. 10 brides showed up (with 9 grooms) in their full bridal fare… and then there was me. You see, I wanted to go so badly that I got myself a replacement dress to play with in the water, since my dress couldn’t come out and play.  The OC Register captured the “behind the scenes” action of the shoot and wrote up an article for the paper today… and we’ll be getting proofs and CDs of our images back from photographers over the next few weeks. Heck, some of my photos are already posted to one of the photographer’s blogs!

All photos courtesy of ANA VENEGAS & THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

I can’t express to you how enjoyable it is to get a big long fancy dress soaking wet and to splash in the waves. It’s the opposite of everything ladylike and formal about a wedding… and it’s all about pure fun! Now I know not everyone has a WARM ocean to hop into for a shoot like this, but in all honesty, any method of getting the gown dirty would be a blast.

(yup… that’s me trying not to peek out of my dress with Greg Bumatay behind the camera)

Sure it’s a little bit of excess… but a lot of these brides are getting their dresses dry cleaned and donating them to
Brides Against Breast Cancer. And for us, it was free… so why not? And I must give a shout-out to my groomsless buddy Kelli and knot super-star Clara for making the day even more fun!
